“The Windy City”, “Wellywood”… These are just two of the many nicknames for Wellington. New Zealand’s capital has a lot to offer.

Wellington’s city centre is reasonably small and all major attractions can be reached on foot. Visit the national Te Papa museum for a day of free education, stroll along the waterfront or take the adorable cable car to the Wellington Botanic Garden.

A Wellington must-do for movie buffs is the Miramar Peninsula. Dive into Peter Jackson’s backyard that boasts movie locations (a scene of King Kong was shot on the sea shores), a giant green screen that you can see as long as there’s no filming happening and of course the Weta Cave, Weta Workshop and the Weta Digital Studios where blockbuster movies are created.

Wellington has a great train system. Hop on the commuter train to venture to the beaches of the Kapiti Coast. Or dive right into the Wairarapa wine valley with charming towns like Featherston and cycle around Martinborough wineries.
